Deen CT Cendol Corner

Under this scorching sun. Under this sweltering hot weather of Malaysia. There’s nothing more refreshing than getting yourself a bowl of welcoming cendol. 

Hard to miss

Speaking of a famous Malaysian dessert, you’ll never forget this word, cendol. Cendol is a dessert stuffed with wriggling worm-like rice flour green jellies, soaked with cool coconut milk, drizzled with muscovado sugar,  and insanely decorated with shaved  ice is just decadent.

Growing up in Ipoh, my heart always leaps at every mention of cendol. You just have to love it. My cendol hunting commenced as I got back from the UK and it never stops ever since.

Deen Cendol is situated nearby to Ipoh Kamdar at the heart of the old Ipoh town, just opposite to the famous Taman Kanak-kanak, a place known for many Malay food fans in Perak.

What makes this place special is of course the cendol itself and this place is famous for “Cendol PJK” (Pulut or the glutinous rice, jagung or the sweetcorn and kacang or the red bean).

I mean, just look at this gorgeous. No wonder people will queue up just to get themselves with a bowl of this. Everything is just right. Golden rule, checked. With the cheapest, the normal cendol is at MYR1.50 and the best in town cendol PJK is MYR3.00. 30 pence extra will be added for a take-away.

When asked, the uncle told me that he had been operating the place for 20 years! That speaks of experience and confidence. I wonder where I had been all this time. The warm and cheerful uncle apart from the place’s perfect ambience for street food (by the roadside) and the retrospective look of the other side of Ipoh are perfect companions to this cendol, which is served bountifully in a steel bowl.
